Book 6–8 weeks before travel. Malaria tablets need to start before travel — timing depends on which antimalarial you choose. If you need Yellow Fever (arriving from endemic country), the certificate takes 10 days to become valid. Hepatitis A and Typhoid can be done 2–3 weeks before departure.

Do I need malaria tablets for Tanzania?
Yes, for virtually all Tanzania itineraries including Zanzibar. Malaria is endemic throughout mainland Tanzania and on Zanzibar. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and all safari areas carry real malaria risk. Antimalarials are not optional for Tanzania — discuss which type with your travel clinic.
Do I need Yellow Fever vaccine for Tanzania?
Yellow Fever proof is required if you are arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. If flying directly from Europe, North America, or Australia, it is not required for entry but may be recommended if your itinerary includes areas with Yellow Fever risk.
Is Zanzibar malaria-free?
No. Zanzibar has malaria risk despite being an island. Antimalarial medication is recommended for Zanzibar as for mainland Tanzania. The risk is real and should not be underestimated.
What vaccines do I need for Kilimanjaro?
The same vaccines recommended for Tanzania generally apply — Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and malaria prevention. The altitude on Kilimanjaro means malaria risk decreases above 2000m, but you will pass through malaria risk areas getting to and from the mountain. Altitude acclimatisation is the primary health concern on the climb itself.
