Do I need Yellow Fever vaccine for Brazil?
It depends where you're going. Yellow Fever vaccination is required or strongly recommended for several Brazilian states including Amazonas, Pará, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, and others. It is generally not required for Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, or coastal beach destinations. Check the specific state you're visiting.
Is there malaria in Brazil?
Malaria risk in Brazil is concentrated in the Amazon region — the states of Amazonas, Pará, Acre, Rondônia, and Roraima. There is no malaria risk in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, the coast, or most tourist destinations in the northeast. Antimalarials are recommended for Amazon travel.
What vaccines do I need for Rio de Janeiro?
No vaccines are required for entry and Yellow Fever is not recommended for Rio itself. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are worth having. Dengue is endemic in Rio and has seen significant outbreaks in recent years — mosquito protection is important. Routine vaccines including MMR should be up to date.
Do I need vaccines for the Amazon in Brazil?
Yes. For Amazon travel, Yellow Fever vaccination is strongly recommended and may be required. Malaria prevention is essential — discuss antimalarial options with your travel clinic. Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Rabies are also recommended for extended jungle travel. Book your clinic appointment well in advance.
